Blood Flow Restriction (or BFR) uses a modified blood pressure cuff placed on the proximal aspect of an extremity to briefly restrict the arterial and venous blood flow, during a short bout of exercise. This will create a pooling effect of deoxygenated blood in the muscle that is working. Forcing a muscle to exercise in this state will create the stimulus needed to muscle strength and hypertrophy. The benefits of using BFR is that you need much lighter loads (20% of 1 RM) then compared to strength training without BFR (80% 1 RM). This is huge in post surgical and injuries to when normal loads are not tolerated.
